Northern Area 18 Plus - The National Federation of 18 Plus Groups - Enquiries about 18 Plus

What is 18 Plus?

Founded in 1941, 18 Plus is the National Activities Organisation that seeks to benefit and improve the lives of young adults, through a careful balance of enjoyment and responsibility.

It is run almost entirely by volunteers and largely by local Committees who are elected to serve for six to twelve months. Members devise programmes of very diverse activities, organising whatever they want from interesting talks and quizzes to learning management and leadership skills, from discos and sports to charity fund raising.

18 Plus actively promotes friendship and participation, providing excellent opportunities for self-development. There is always plenty to do, both during the week and at weekends, as Area's and Groups join in one another's events and debate and vote at 18 Plus meetings and conferences. Plus news and other publications are distributed free of charge.

There are many established members only holidays, such as the WASH weekend (Weekend At Sunny Hunstanton), when 800 members take over a Norfolk holiday camp and enjoy a weekend of top quality live bands and entertainment. Clock, China Black, Bamboo, Womack & Womack, The Real Thing, Kenny Thomas, Oceanic, Capella, Rage, JX, and Technotronic are just some of the artists who have played live to 18 Plus audiences.

The federation held a series of Celebrations for it's Golden Jubilee back in 1991 including a members past and present evening, held at Northwich Memorial Hall with live music from Irish rock band The Poor Mouth. A charity fundraiser called the Golden Gander Wander also took place in the North West.

As the federation approaches it's 60th Anniversary plans are already underway for the next round of celebrations.

A Year's membership costs only £20-00 and any young adults aged upto 35 are welcomed and encouraged, free from the religious, political or commercial pressures common to many competitors. 18 Plus is non-profit making and no charge is normally made to prospective members. A further advantage of joining just one Group is the automatic entitlement to the activities and benefits of all 100 groups.
