Bunk Barn Holiday

Rothwell's Bunk Barn saw 18 People enjoy the delights of the Yorkshire Dates over Easier weekend. Friday night saw them meet up at the Timber Lodge near Clapham for the first night's 'relaxation'.

On Saturday morning. the Party split up, with some heading to the beautiful Inglelon Waterfalls and the others walking up to Inglebrough, followed by a cruise on Ambleside - everyone eventually met back up at the location for Saturday and Sunday night (Dales Bridge). Saturday Night was a mix of Wine Tasting (quite nice!) and a visit to Baratdales Bridge after a lovely meal in Austwide.

Sunday was more of the same, with some of the Party taking a scenic walk to Horton-in-Ribblesdale and those who fancied something livelier going to the town of Hawes for a shopping trip. followed by a walk around to soak up the atmosphere. After returning to Dales Bridge, most of the group drove over to Austwide - it was Pub Quiz night (and they did rather well!).

On Monday - a fond farewell to the Dales. but only after a stop in Skipton to try out the Famous Pie Shop. after which it was back to the daily grind.

Overall. everyone enjoyed it. and Plans are in hand for next Year's Bunk Barn. which will either be in Derbyshire or North Wales - if You want more details, contact Rothwell Group (you're welcome!)

Hello all - so, we have a new committee: can I thank everyone who turned up at Stockport for the Area Conference to 'do your bit for Northern Area'. A special thanks to Dave Orsler for taking over as Area Treasurer, and can I publicly thank Simon Frith for the outstanding job that he's done over the last three years. You'll be pleased to know that both Adrian Barnard and Bekki were very pleased with what they saw - compared to what happened at other Conferences, we did really well: like us, London & South East and Southern have the main Committee positions filled, Midland has a co-opted Treasurer, while North Thames & Chiltern has no Chairman (Wayne Fenton's moving back to the North West) and East Anglia have no Chairman OR Administrator - TWO Emergency Conferences for Bekki and Martin to attend.

By the time you read this, I may well be on a Narrow Boat - the first National Narrow Boat Holiday around the Midlands, and it's a Northern event. Northwich and Rothwell Groups are involved. Plans are already in hand for NNH 2004 - anyone fancy Worcestershire (the Severn and Avon?)

Enjoy yourselves, and see you at the National Treasure Hunt (Northern 1-2-3?)

At The National
Spring Holiday
(Friday 4th -
Monday 7th April)

After last year, there was a sense of gentle anticipation surrounding this year's Brean, as over 200 Plussers made their way down and across to the north coast of Somerset, with the cars arriving at the site from mid-afternoon onwards.

After locating their caravans, the the-honoured tradition of allocating beds took place (one senior Plusser got round the problem by only spending two hours in their own caravan all weekend, much to the relief of their room-mate who then slept free from a snore that sounds like someone drilling through concrete), along with sorting out the first meal of the weekend. At this point, a number of people then made the mistake of asking where the supermarket was: at WASH there's one on-sight, however at Brean if's a branch of Tesco three miles away. Half of Plus seemed to be in Tesco, some stocking up on actual food.

And so on to the venue - the usual rounds of getting to know you, finding out where the parties are going on, and listening to the entertainment, with the National Chairman wandering happily around all night, accepted the offer of a drink (or two) guess it's a perk of the job.

Saturday morning started early for some (still coming back from Friday Night parties), and less early for others, with the chance to try their hand at Kite-Flying (makes a change from Clay Pigeons).

At lunchtime, a quiz was held in the venue, comprising about eight teams (some rather hastily thrown together) who had a great time, even if some of the answers (and the team names) were a little rude; this was followed by the moment that some will never forget, and others would like to the Karaoke. Our National Chairman, who is a rather decent singer herself, agreed to take on the Simon Cowell role as one of the judges, scoring on: various criteria including Choice of Song and Entertainment 'Value'. The 'artistes' had free range of a props/fancy dress basket behind the stage with which to transform themselves and then murder some classics - some though were taking it a bit seriously and brought their own costumes.

The competition was fierce, hard-fought and sometimes in tune. Paul West did Tom Jones' 'Green Green Grass' in a hula skirt, a duet (Jemini??) slaughtered a song from Grease, while lan Crawshaw did 'He Ain't Heavy'- the singer's dead, so he dressed up as a ghost! The deserved winners were South Bucks/Hounslow as Atomic Kitten (although rather more furry) doing 'The Tide Is High'- their performance left people in tears (and one judge wondering if they'd suffered a rupture).

For many, the highlight of the weekend was Sunday's Real Ale Trip - spots, cross dressing and all. The spots; a simple enough idea - on entering a pub, cover anything that doesn't move (or doesn't get out the way quickly enough), with small selfad esive spots, including the bar-staff. Nothing was safe - windows, chairs, toilets(?), all good clean fun. Now, the cross-dressing this was actually a Lichfield Group suggestion (with some coming prepared), others joined in by raiding the fancydress basket from the venue, or asking understanding females for assistance. The results were hilarious, eye-opening and, in a couple of instances, rather worrying.

So what of the actual acts over the weekend? By and large they were pretty good, the Midnight Dynamos got caught out when everyone joined in 'Living Next: Door to Alice (Dirty Version)', the Freddie Mercury tribute was impressive, if a touch loud for some, while the DJ was excellent after a slow start.

And the verdict? A resounding success, a great location and extremely well organized. It's not WASH, but R isn't intended to be - Brean is a holiday in its own right, and deserves to be treated thus. Already plans are afoot for Brean 2004; will the Kittens come back, will there still be spots on the toilets, and Will a bloke get a snog from a bloke who doesn't realise what they're snogging? You'll have to find out by going.

Stuff and Nonsence

For your library ...

No doubt you have a reasonable book collection; maybe Harry Potter, a good murder mystery, a dictionary or atlas. However, you may not have any of these GENUINE book titles that are available. (This'll test Waterstones!). Happy reading!!

Northern Lights Meets ....

Geogg Buller. Lincs Quest Group Chairman

So Geoff tell us about yourself

I joined Grimsby/Cleethorpes 18 Plus in 1983, when the group membership averaged 80+ and was a member for nineteen and a half years. I first became a committee member in 1985, serving until 1998. During this time I have held all group committee positions (at one memorable point, all at the same time!) and, when the Yorkshire Area was divided into districts, was Area DLO (District Liaison Officer) for the East District, which encompased Hull, Bridlington, Scunthorpe, Beverley, Lincoln and Grimsby/Cleethorpes - just a small corner of the Yorkshire Area. One of the most enjoyable challenges I had was in 1991 as Chairman of the Steering Committee which opened Hull 18 Plus and seeing it grow to being best group in the Area within the year. I had been taking a 'sabbatical' since 1998 from committee life. However, after Grimsby/Cleethorpes 18 Plus closed last year, at the suggestion of Bekki & Mark, I was pleased to become involved in opening Lincs Quest, of which I am now chairman.

How are you enjoying the challenge of Lincs Quest?

It has been a lot less pressurized opening and running Lincs Quest, rather than a new Plus group; we set lower aims - only meeting twice a month, and putting on one event per month at weekends, in addition to any Plus event. This way we ensured we ran one successful event a month, rather than trying to fill the programme every weekend with events which didn't go ahead. We opened in September and, since December, our membership has doubled from 7 to 14 - the rewards speak for themselves.

What do you enjoy most about Plus?

Meeting people, socializing and taking part in all the various activities and dances which make 18 Plus unique.

Do you think the changes voted through at the ANC will improve Plus?

Well, in a way, I think that it has been made worst for the second tier groups; the proviso of being able to attend events at the discretion of the organizers makes us second-class citizens.

What's your best Plus memory?

Proposing to my wife, Lis, in the middle of the dance floor at the Area Christmas dance on Christmas Eve 1988.

Any funny or embarrassing stories?

Well, there have been so many funny moments - here's one. Early one morning at WASH, after getting up, I opened the caravan door and, on looking out, to my amazement found someone hanging half in and half out of the bedroom window. When I asked him what he was doing, he replied that he hadn't wanted to wake us and so had decided to get out of the caravan through the window and had got stuck! Of course, the whole caravan then had to get up and have a look. As for embarrassing moments - I'd rather not tell you those!

Name one thing you would change about Plus

The structure of the Federation, which has just been changed, so that members over the age of 36 in Plus groups are full members and allowing members under the age of 36 to join second-tier groups but only as associates. Is it just me, but I find it confusing!

Have you any ambitions within Plus?

Not really - been there, done that, got most of the T-shirts. I'm quite happy to let younger faces get on with it!

Where do you see Northern Area in, say, three years time?

Still here with Lincs Quest being the biggest group in the Area!

Geoff, the very best of luck; next time, Northern Lights Meets ... Saddam Hussain's Travel Agent
