Whodunit at The Hobbit

Saturday August 18th 2001

On Saturday August 18th 2001 a party of Huddersfield and Leeds 18 Plus members attended an evening guaranteed to be absolutely packed with mystery, murder and mayhem. It was the latest Murder Mystery Evening staged by Murder Mystery U.K. at The Hobbit Hotel near Sowerby Bridge.

We arrived at The Hobbit, along with hoards of other guests for the Murdwe Mystery, after getting drinks we were ushered into the restaurant, as we passed through the doors we were each given a name badge, as we were all to play characters in the drame.

This evening's Mystery was staged around the Annual Dinner of the "Calderdale Jazz Singers Society". Our host for the evening was the President of the Society, "Mr Marshall Kennedy". The majority of guests portrayed members of the "Calderdale Jazz Singers Society". The President extended to his fellow members and their guests a few words of welcome this evening - in addition to thanking everyone for supporting him through the year, he appeared to be a guest like the rest of us, having been given a red name badge rather than a white one like the majority.

Our own John Wilson had also volunteered to wear a red badge, thus being a potential suspect, "Herbert Donaghue, - an extremely successful entrepeneur, having made his fortune from 'wheeling & dealing' in one business venture or another".

The starters arrived, but no murder? As we ate we studied the information provided, looking for possible victims, murderers and motives.

We had finished our starters when there was a blood curdling scream; "Murder! Murder?". A body had been discovered so everyone filed along the coridor and up the stairs to reception, there we observed a body with a gun shot wound in the middle of the forehead, it was Mrs Madeleine Kennedy". After an examination of the crime scene it was back down stairs and along the corridor to the restaurant. What a wierd procession!

The main course arrived.

The winner was Huddersfield Group's own John A Smith who received a certificate and a meal voucher up to the value of £30 for two people, (A gift voucher with conditions attached, obviously designed to reduce the possibility of having to part with the full amount).
