Lincs group in
quest for fun

A GRIMSBY-area group is proving to be just the ticket as its members quest to make new friends and enjoy more active social lives.

Lincs Quest is an offshoot of - and is affiliated to - the National Federation of 18 Plus Groups.

"Lincs Quest is aimed at those aged 36 and over, although younger members can join, and offers activities and social events at local regional and national level," said organiser Geoff Buller.

The 18 Plus idea was founded in 1941 as a national voluntary and non-profit-making organisation.

It offers members the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, including social events, sports, holidays, competitions and fundraising for charity.

"Run by its members and for its members, 18 Plus offers opportunities for people to take part in activities across the whole range of social interaction, from quizzes to ten pin bowling, from caravan weekends to raft building competitions - a week in the life of a 'Plusser' can be busy and varied," Geoff said.

"However, because a significant number of over 35s have shown interest in joining 18 Plus, but they aren't able to as they are too old, it started a second tier of groups in 2002 for those aged 36 and over and Lincs Quest is one of the first of these."

Geoff and his wife Lis were two of the first members of the Lincolnshire group.

"As Well as offering local activities, Lincs Quest members are also able to take part in the full range of 18 Plus events, at both area and national level," Geoff said.

The Lincs Quest group currently has 18 members, mostly from the North East Lincolnshire area, but they are joined by members from Lincoln and Doncaster.

They meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, from 8.30pm, in the lounge bar of The Countryman, Fieldhouse Road, Humberston.

'As a group, we arrange events of a varied nature for weekends and Wednesday evenings," Geoff said.

The programme of activities for January and February include balloon sculpturing, a night out in Leeds, a trip to Hull Truck Theatre to see Black Ties & Tales, and a national badminton competition.

"There's also ten pin bowling, table tennis, walking, jogging ur just simply going down the pub," Geoff said.

"Basically anything members want to do - it' s about getting people out and about."

New members, singles or couples, are always welcome to go along, join in the activities and make new friends.

Membership is £20.25 a year, but newcomers aren't asked to pay this until they have completed their first month of attendance.
