This year, Cheadle Group decided to attend A M M O (aka Annual Mad Mini
Olympics) in force. The event was held on a sunny weekend over the 3rd to 6th
of July at the East Mersea Youth Camp, in the Thames estuary. First to arrive
were Caroline and Sarah who pitched their tents at the end of the camp site,
with a ditch on one side and the estuary on the other. Craig and Dave then had
to pitch near them, to be joined by some Bradford and Huddersfield members.
Saturday saw a trip to buy up the super-market in West Mersea ready for the
barbeque that evening. Linda arrived in time for the barbeque but not in time
to rescue Sarah's vegetarian option which had taken a dislike to a barbie
grill. It was also around this time we began to doubt the wisdom of pitching
our tents near the ditch - now know why modern tents are constructed with built
in mosquito screens/doors!
The Saturday night Disco had a seventies theme and was followed by Dave's party
in one of the wooden bunk houses, which finished at sunrise and an early
morning, (or should it be late night), chat back at the tents, which wasn't bad
as the team had spent all Saturday afternoon in action for the "It's a
knockout" style sports. The team was supplimented by Andy from Guildford and
Paul from Huddersfield who all really enjoyed the events which included, bunjie
struggling, bouncy castles and bike riding. When the results were announced you
can imagine the shock - we'd come third out of over twenty entries - we like to
think it's skill, and not beginners' luck! We were in for another shock when
the results of the ladies archery competition were announced, Caroline had come
third, but some of us were sure she'd been asleep in her tent at the time!
Maybe Craig wore a sarong a la Beckham!
Sunday saw the real ale trip and while everyone was away, Linda was seen
sneaking back into the bunkhouse to spice up Dave's Punch Jug. After Sunday
evening's entertainment - Steve Grace as the D J with another Commitments style
band, this time the Big Mac Wholly Soul Band. The Punch Jug visited the late
night bonfire, along with a picnic of left overs and once again we saw the
sunrise.
Monday morning dawned and breakfast was purchased as a take-away from the
canteen to save on the washing up. Then home!
