FOUR Real Ale Pubs for NGOOT
Four of the most popular pubs in this part
of the world were carefully chosen and checked out for NGOOT 2005. They are all
on the doorstep of the NGOOT venue - providing a real ale trip with a
difference.
The
Swan, Tockington
A traditional country pub with a 'fishing'
theme. It is renowned locally for its huge home made pies, including the famous
Dragon Pie. The Swan has a large garden at the front and the rear. Boules can
be played.
The
Bowl Inn, Almondsbury
A very popular, attractive 17th century inn
with a double bar next to the church. It is supposedly haunted by the famous
Grey Lady. Good food, large portions, reasonably priced. Separate restaurant up
stairs. Function room available.
- COURAGE Best Bitter
- SMILES Best Bitter
- WADWORTH 6X
- WHITBREAD Flowers Original
- GUEST BEER Regular
The
Anchor Inn, Oldbury-on-Severn
This is a lovely village local set by a
tributary of the Severn. There is a traditional public bar to the right, and a
more comfortable lounge through the main entrance.
A bright restaurant sits at the rear, and
the extensive garden has mature trees for shelter and a petanque piste at the
far end.
- Cask Ales:
- Bass
- Butcombe Bitter
- Theakstons Old Peculier
- Wickwar BOB
- Keg Ales:
- John Smiths Extra Smooth
Bitter
- Lagers:
- Carling
- Fosters
- Stella Artois
The
White Hart, Littleton-on-Severn
- SMILES Best Bitter
- YOUNG'S Bitter
- YOUNG'S Special
- GUEST BEER Regular
This partly timber-framed building dates
form the 1730s, but has been a pub for only a century. The pub has flagstoned
floors, inglenooks and an understated traditional decor.
Try a 'room crawl' through the various
drinking areas off the main bar. The family room, with its table football game,
doubles as the no-smoking room. The lounge has two dining areas set back from
the bar where award-winning food at sensible prices is served making booking
always advisable.
A large pleasant garden at the front is
complemented by a sunny courtyard at the back.

Why I went
NGOOT in 2002 was the second major event I
had been on. I found it very friendly welcoming and fun.
As I was driving down from Bradford I was
wondering if I would have anyone to talk to other than my team mates who I was
only beginning to get to know.
When I arrived at 11:00 p.m. it was straight
to the pub and meeting lots of Plussers chatting and catching up on the gossip.
Then to the scout venue continuing 'till the early hours.
Sleeping in dormitories I found an
excellent way of getting to know the others who were staying, you are not left
on your own in a hotel room wondering where people are.
Saturday was an early start, straight away
with a car treasure hunt, hunting for clues to solve a logic problem,
collecting the largest piece of grass amongst other things. Followed by pub
lunches, orienteering in the dark, potholing, making masks, ghost stories,
getting tied up with pieces of string, barbeuqes.
Sunday meant more of the same a walking
treasure hunt, pooh sticks on the original bridge, charades with jarrett and
some questionable things to guess. Nicky making us hop, skip and jump along a
footpath. Dave making our brains hurt with his quizzes.
The camaraderie was excellent, everyone was
in this together and in the evening everyone had there own story to tell.
Whether its the debate on if bamboo is really a piece of grass, where on earth
where Daves photos taken from, whose feet have the most blisters.
At the end of the event each group had to
give a speech about why they should win. My favourite being the Bouncy Bouncy
Fun Fun Fun speech saying we should win just so See Spot Run doesn't, then
getting everyone in the room to hold hands and pray to that effect.
This weekend has been one of the highlights
of my 18 Plus life, it was a well organised event, with loads of activities and
a great atmosphere.
In that one weekend I made so many friends.
It was well worth the six hour drive to attend.
As you can tell I am a convert, and I am
pleased to see NGOOT return. So if any one is wondering whether to go or not,
my answer is definitly YES. Its great.
